The current IMAT format
IMAT is the single admissions test for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine taught in English at Italian public universities. Ministerial decree DM 1005 of 6 August 2026 set the 2026 test for 29 September 2026 at 13:30 Italian time: 60 questions in 100 minutes, scored +1.5 for a right answer, −0.4 for a wrong one and 0 for a blank.

How IMAT scoring works
- +1.5 per correct answer, −0.4 per wrong answer, 0 for a blank; maximum 90. EU and equivalent candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked.
- A guess breaks even when you are right about 21% of the time (0.4 ÷ 1.9). Ruling options out first is what makes a guess worth taking.
- Biology (23 questions) and Chemistry (15) make up 38 of the 60 questions.
- Places depend on the ranking, so the score you need is set by that year's candidates and by the university.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Answering everything out of habit. With negative marking, blind guesses on true unknowns lose points on average.
- Spreading time evenly across topics. Biology and chemistry are most of the paper; logical reasoning is 5 questions and reading and general knowledge 4.
- Treating older past papers as a guide to the current balance of topics. The test is now set by the Ministry and run by CINECA; Cambridge Assessment no longer has a role.
- Practicing without the clock: 60 questions in 100 minutes is 100 seconds a question.
