Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT has four sections in this order: Reading (about 30 minutes), Listening (about 29 minutes), Writing (about 23 minutes) and Speaking (about 8 minutes) — around 90 minutes of testing and about two hours with check-in. Reading and Listening are adaptive. Each section and the overall score are reported on a 1–6 scale, with a comparable 0–120 score shown for two years after the change.

- Institutions set their own requirements; check whether yours are stated on the 1–6 scale or as a 0–120 figure.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Preparing from pre-2026 material. Integrated read-listen-respond tasks and 0–30 section scores belong to the retired format.
- Treating the first Reading or Listening module lightly. It decides which second module you get.
- Writing an essay where the task asks for an email. Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion reward a direct response to the prompt.
- Not practicing Speaking in its current form: about 8 minutes of Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
