TOEFL in short

The TOEFL iBT runs under two hours and scores Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing from 0 to 30 each, for a total out of 120. It is computer-delivered, including a recorded Speaking section rather than a face-to-face interview. Several tasks are integrated — you read something, listen to something, then respond using both — and those are the tasks that most often decide the score.

About the TOEFL

Understanding the Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL iBT is the gold standard for measuring English proficiency for non-native speakers seeking to study at English-speaking universities, particularly in the United States. Over 11,500 universities and institutions in 160 countries accept TOEFL scores.

The TOEFL iBT tests academic English proficiency through integrated tasks that reflect real university classroom communication. It measures your ability to use English in academic contexts rather than isolated language skills.

American universities typically require TOEFL scores between 80-100 for undergraduate programs and 100-110 for competitive graduate programs. Top universities like Harvard, Stanford, and MIT often require 100+.

The test is delivered via the internet at authorized test centers worldwide or through the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. The enhanced TOEFL iBT (introduced in 2023) is shorter while maintaining the same quality and acceptance.

How the TOEFL is scored

  • Four section scores of 0-30, summed to a total out of 120. Universities usually publish a total requirement and often section minimums as well.
  • Speaking and Writing are scored against published rubrics, partly by trained raters and partly automatically, so clear structure and directly addressing the prompt matter as much as fluency.
  • Integrated tasks are scored on how accurately you use the source material, not on your opinion. Notes are the skill being tested.
  • Scores are normally valid for two years from the test date.

Mistakes that cost marks

  • Speaking freely in integrated tasks instead of reporting what the sources said. The rubric rewards accurate synthesis, and personal opinion earns nothing there.
  • Taking notes in full sentences. There is not time; a note-taking shorthand has to be built before test day, not invented during it.
  • Ignoring the recorded format of Speaking. Talking to a microphone with a countdown is a distinct skill from talking to a person, and it is practisable.
  • Preparing English generally rather than preparing the test. Students who already have the language usually lose marks to format, and that is the faster fix.

What TOEFL preparation actually looks like

A realistic shape for most students. Your plan is built from a diagnostic, not from a template.

  1. 1

    Week 1

Full timed test to establish the section profile and whether the gap is language or format.

  2. 2

    Weeks 2-4

Task-type work, especially the integrated Speaking and Writing tasks, with a note-taking system built deliberately.

  3. 3

    Weeks 5-6

Full timed tests with recorded Speaking responses reviewed against the rubric.

  4. 4

    Final week

Light review; confirm the score requirement for each institution.

Test dates, fees and current score tables are published by ETS — TOEFL. Always confirm requirements with the institution you are applying to.

TOEFL — Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the TOEFL iBT and how is it scored?
The test now runs under two hours. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing are each scored from 0 to 30, giving a total out of 120. Most universities publish both a total requirement and, often, section minimums.
What are integrated tasks?
Several Speaking and Writing tasks give you something to read and something to listen to, then ask you to respond using both. They are the part students most often underestimate: the skill being tested is accurate note-taking and synthesis under time pressure, not opinion or general fluency.
TOEFL or IELTS?
Both are accepted almost everywhere. TOEFL is entirely computer-based with a recorded Speaking section, which suits people who would rather not sit an interview; IELTS Speaking is face to face, which suits people who find a conversation easier than a microphone. Neither is easier — they reward different habits.
How long are TOEFL scores valid?
Scores are normally valid for two years from the test date. Check the specific requirement with the institution, since some set their own window.
How much can I improve with tutoring?
It depends where you start. Students who already have the English but lose marks to test format — mis-structured responses, running out of time, missing what a task actually asks — usually move fastest, because the fix is technique. Building underlying language ability takes longer and we will tell you honestly which case you are in after a diagnostic.
