How do you start?

Request a free intro call: it is a conversation about your goals and timeline, not a lesson or a test. Science (40 questions, 40 minutes) and Writing (one essay, 40 minutes) are optional. The Composite, 1–36, is the average of English, Math and Reading only.

Who ACT tutoring is for

Lessons are one-to-one, so the plan starts from where you are and the Composite your colleges need.

First-time test takers

High school students preparing for their first ACT, who need the content and the pace of each section: 50 English questions in 35 minutes, 45 Math in 50, 36 Reading in 40.

  • Starting point agreed on the intro call
  • Pacing for each section
  • English, Math and Reading

Students retaking the ACT

Students who have a Composite already and want to raise it before their next test date, starting from the section that is holding it down.

  • Your recent score report, if you have one
  • Section-by-section work
  • Timing under test conditions

Deciding on Science and Writing

Science and Writing are optional and do not count toward the Composite. Science adds a Science score and a STEM score; Writing adds an ELA score. Take them if your colleges want them.

  • Check your colleges' requirements
  • Science lessons if you take it
  • Essay practice if you take Writing

What ACT lessons cover

  • Find the line in the passage that proves the answer

Math, and Science if you take it

  • Solve algebra, geometry and trigonometry questions
  • Work 45 questions in 50 minutes, each with four answer choices
  • Pace Science, 40 questions in 40 minutes, if you take it
  • Decide early whether Science belongs in your plan

Test strategy

  • Pace each section against its time limit
  • Recognize the question patterns the ACT repeats
  • Build stamina for about 2 hours 5 minutes of required sections
  • Manage test-day pressure

ACT tutoring: common questions

About the current ACT, the tutoring, prices and refunds.

What is on the current ACT?

The enhanced ACT has three required sections — English (50 questions, 35 minutes), Math (45 questions, 50 minutes) and Reading (36 questions, 40 minutes) — about 2 hours 5 minutes in all. Science (40 questions, 40 minutes) and Writing (one essay, 40 minutes) are optional. The Composite, 1–36, is the average of English, Math and Reading only. Not adaptive: ACT describes the test as linear, with no mid-test difficulty shifts, online and on paper.

Should I take the ACT or the SAT?

They are built differently. The ACT has three required sections (English, Math and Reading) with a 1–36 Composite, optional Science and Writing, and does not adapt to your answers. The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, is scored 400–1600 and adapts by module. Which suits you depends on your strengths and your test dates; it is a good question for the free intro call.

Do I need to take ACT Science?

Science is optional. It is not part of the 1–36 Composite; taking it adds a Science score and a STEM score (Math and Science). Check whether the colleges on your list ask for it. If you take it, it is taught in the same one-to-one lessons.

Is there an ACT diagnostic or practice test?

No. TestPrep USA does not have ACT practice tests. On the free intro call we look at your current ACT level and your goals — a recent score report or a piece of marked work helps — and the study plan is built from there, before you pay for anything. The intro call is a conversation, not a lesson or a test.

How much does ACT tutoring cost?

A single 90-minute one-to-one lesson is $100. Packages of 10, 20 and 50 lessons lower the rate, down to $80 a lesson in the 50-lesson package ($4,000). The ACT group course is $1,050, or 2 payments of $575.

How long does ACT preparation take?

It depends on your starting point, your target Composite and your test date, so there is no standard timeline. The plan is set from those three once your starting point has been reviewed.

Do you offer a score improvement guarantee?

No. Full (100%) refund if you are not satisfied after your first private lesson, or after the first week of a group course. No score is guaranteed. Results depend on your starting point, your test date and the work between lessons; what we guarantee is the refund above.

Can I take lessons from outside the US?

Yes. All lessons are taught live online, so students join from anywhere. Tell us your time zone on the free intro call.
